Full Body Skin Checks

Crown Medical Skin Clinic offers full body skin checks to identify any moles, spots or lesions that may require further attention. These assessments are performed by experienced General Practitioners, ensuring a high standard of clinical precision and safety.

Changes in the skin can occur gradually and may not always be obvious, which is why a thorough professional assessment is important. Whether you’ve noticed a new or changing spot or are simply due for a routine check, we’re here to address your needs. Get in touch with us to arrange an appointment.

What is a full body skin check?

A full body skin check is a comprehensive examination of the skin conducted by a qualified medical practitioner to assess for signs of skin cancer and other skin changes that may warrant a closer review. This includes conditions such as melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and any suspicious lesions that may need to be monitored over time.

What happens during the check?

A full body skin check is generally safe, painless and non-invasive. Here’s what to expect during your appointment:

Step 1: Getting ready for the examination

At the beginning of your session, you will be asked to change into a medical gown so your practitioner can inspect your skin thoroughly. Your comfort and privacy will be prioritised throughout the process.

Step 2: A head-to-toe skin check

Your practitioner will survey your skin from head to toe using a dermatoscope, rather than focusing only on one area of concern. This includes parts of the body that are often difficult to check on your own, such as:

  • The scalp
  • Behind the ears
  • Under the arms
  • The back
  • Between the toes
  • The soles of the feet

Step 4: Discussing next steps

If a spot appears unusual, your practitioner will explain what they have observed and whether any follow-up is recommended. Depending on the findings, next steps may include:

  • Continuous monitoring of the area, especially if the spot appears low-risk but requires observation
  • Taking clinical photographs, allowing for accurate comparison at future appointments
  • Recommending a biopsy, where a small sample of skin is taken under local anaesthetic for further testing

If a biopsy is required, it is typically a quick in-clinic procedure. The area will be numbed beforehand, and the sample will be sent for laboratory analysis. Your practitioner will then discuss the results with you and outline any further management if needed.

Additional treatment options such as surgical excision, photodynamic therapy or cryotherapy may be recommended based on the diagnosis and individual clinical considerations. These will be discussed with you in detail, including how the treatment works, the recovery process, potential risks and realistic outcomes.

Why you should have a full body skin check

Because the assessment covers the entire body, it provides a more complete picture of your skin and reduces the likelihood of overlooking areas that are difficult to monitor on your own.

You may benefit from a full body skin check if you:

  • Have fair or sun-sensitive skin, which is more prone to UV-related damage and skin changes
  • Have a personal or family history of skin cancer, particularly melanoma or other diagnosed lesions
  • Have a high number of moles
  • Have moles that are irregular in colour, size or shape
  • Have experienced repeated or blistering sunburns, especially during childhood or adolescence
  • Spend extended time outdoors due to occupation or recreational activities, increasing cumulative sun exposure
  • Have previously used tanning beds or artificial UV sources
  • Have noticed new, changing or unusual spots, including those that differ from your other moles
  • Have areas of skin that do not heal or persist beyond several weeks
  • Have a weakened immune system or are taking medications that may affect skin health

Even if you do not identify with any of the above, a full body skin check remains an important part of routine healthcare.

How often should you have a skin cancer check?

For most adults, a full body skin check is recommended once a year. If you are at increased risk of melanoma, we advise performing a self-skin check every three months and undergoing a professional full body skin check every six months.

There is no strict schedule that applies to everyone, and skin checks do not need to be limited to a particular time of year. The most important approach is consistency, both in professional assessments and in becoming familiar with your own skin.

When performing self-checks, it can be helpful to follow clinical guidelines such as the ABCDE and EFG rules, which are used to identify changes in moles or skin spots:

  • A – Asymmetry: one half of the mole does not match the other
  • B – Border: edges are irregular, uneven or blurred
  • C – Colour: multiple or uneven shades (brown, black, red, white)
  • D – Diameter: larger than 6mm or increasing in size
  • E – Evolving: any change in shape, colour, size or behaviour

The EFG rule may also help identify more aggressive lesions:

  • E – Elevated: raised above the skin surface
  • F – Firm: feels firm to the touch
  • G – Growing: increasing in size over time

If you notice any of these changes, it’s important to arrange a professional assessment.
